POPM 3240 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Net Present Value, Contagious Disease, Paratuberculosis
Document Summary
Device/process designed to detect or quantify a sign, substance or response in an individual or group. Used to classify: healthy vs sick, affected vs not affected, mild vs moderate vs severe (eg. severity of cancer, affected vs don"t know vs not affected. Early detection of a pathological process or impaired productivity sub-clinical disease. Sick confirm, classify, guide treatment or aid in prognosis of disease clinical disease. The gold standard: a test that is absolutely accurate. Diagnoses all individuals with disease and misdiagnoses none. Test results that provide useful information to the investigative or diagnostic process. Given that the test says individual is positive, what is the probability that they actually have the disease? (and vice versa) Timing (eg. diurnal variation in what the test is measuring) Test inhibitors, immunosuppression resulting in no production of antibodies. Too early in disease course for response. We have a gold standard test to determine which individuals are and are not diseased.
