PSYC 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Striatum, Hypothalamus, Paraventricular Nucleus Of Hypothalamus
Document Summary
Examines physical, cognitive, and social development across the life span: we are most impressionable when we are young. Nature/nurture: to what degree are the changes that happen to us a part of our biology vs. a part of our environment. Our social development is obviously much more nurture oriented. This explains why people are so different. Continuity/stages: some aspects of development are gradual & continuous, other aspects change abruptly in stages. For example, we know we have better memories now than when we were 5, but these change must be observed across years because short term there is very subtle changes. Extreme view: psychological development occurs in a series of abrupt, age-linked stages: analogy: caterpillar (cid:314) butterfly, like physical development: crawl (cid:314) walk. People walk fairly early on and it can happen quick. An important thing is that there is no back and forth between these. Modest view stages: serial: dvpt tends to happen in order.
