Document Summary

A multi stage process that allows us to store and retrieve information. Memory processes: encoding: getting info into memory, storage: retaining info in memory, retrieval: recalling and using previously stored and encoded info. This is less effective: deep processing: is really thinking about and understanding the material. This is a much better way to get things into your long-term memory. Take examples from your own life to make it meaningful to you: long-term memory. Iconic memory: fleeting visual memory, fraction of a second. Echoic memory: fleeting auditory memory, about 2-5 seconds. Limited in duration: after 3 seconds, only 50% is recalled, and after 12 seconds, nothing is remembered. Associates new and old info: rules of the game, strategies of the game, this game. Solve problems: can"t solve problems in long-term memory because its our conscious memory. Automatic: the unconscious encoding of information about space, time, frequency, and well- learned info.
