Document Summary

It is how you think about things that affects your stress: can exasperate your stress or alleviate your stress. Illustrative example: a history of domestic violence is correlated with cervical cancer. Because abuse has a direct impact on stress which will have an impact of immune functioning, so body cannot fight hpv, which will lead to cervical cancer direct root. Stress reduces preventative health behaviours, if life is stressful women will not go for a pap test and then preventative cell changes are not caught, then cervical cancer occurs. Stress impacts maladaptive coping behaviour, so if a woman was in an abusive relationship she will turn to smoking, drinking, diet, which will reduce immune functioning, so body cannot fight hpv which can cause cervical cancer. Vulnerability and protective factors: vulnerability factors: increase susceptibility to stress, lack of support network, poor coping skills, pessimism, protective factors: increase resources to cope with stress, social support, coping skills, optimism.
