PSYC 1000 Lecture 7: & 8 - Motivation & Personality (Chapter 11.1~11.3 / 12.1~12.3)
Document Summary
Lecture 7 & 8 - motivation & personality. A process that influences the direction, persistence, and vigour of goal-directed behaviour. Biological motives - eat, drink, sex, temperature, sleep, rest, etc. Social motives - achievement, affiliation, autonomy, maturance, etc. Internal physiological equilibrium that body strives to maintain. Requires sensory mechanism (for detection), response system (to deal with imbalance), and control center (to regulate) Physiological disruptions to homeostasis produce drives to behave in a certain way. Stimuli that pulls organism towards goal (ex: sweet drink) --> drink not b/c we need it, but b/c it tastes good! Motivation influenced by anticipation of future needs (predictions) Physiology of hunger --> homeostatic mechanisms help regulate eating. Not necessarily for immediate energy needs --> it"s anticipated! (has many factors) But not the whole story! (healthier-eating people feel full faster o: --> quality of food matters too!) Cholecystokinin (cck) released by small intestine into blood --> travels to brain and communicates that it has food!
