Translating measures of personality so the same question means the same thing to everyone. Different response styles in different cultures (in collectivist cultures, it"s not socially acceptable to say highly positive things about yourself) Many core dimensions of personality are influenced by genes. Are identical twins raised together more alike than fraternal twins raised together? (yes) Are identical twins raised together more alike than identical twins raised apart? (no) Are adoptive siblings raised together more alike than 2 random people raised apart? (no) Looks at how scoring high or low on each of the big five would have been adaptive. High = more tuned to danger and being cautious. Low = good to provide critical perspective, prevents rash decisions. Low = preserve traditions and maintain a cohesive sense of identity within the culture. Argues that extraversion is determined by people"s threshold for arousal. Ascending reticular activating system (aras): plays a central role in controlling this arousal response.
