PSYC 2310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Kurt Lewin, Leon Festinger, Stanley Milgram
Document Summary
Very few individuals can live in absolute solidarity as we are social animals. We study the threads that (cid:272)o(cid:374)(cid:374)e(cid:272)t hu(cid:373)a(cid:374)s. o(cid:373)eti(cid:373)es (cid:272)o(cid:374)(cid:374)e(cid:272)tio(cid:374)s (cid:272)ause (cid:272)o(cid:374)fli(cid:272)ts, lo(cid:448)e, att(cid:396)a(cid:272)tio(cid:374) . Social thinking: when we think about other people, what happens when we are in a group, when thinking about a situation (embarrassment, happiness) Social influence: how other people influence us, and how we influence others. Our behaviour in crowds is different than our behaviour alone. The scientific study of the way in which a pe(cid:396)so(cid:374)"s thoughts, feeli(cid:374)gs a(cid:374)d (cid:271)eha(cid:448)iou(cid:396)s a(cid:396)e influenced by the real or imagined presence of other people. (allport, 1985). This differentiates social psyc from philosophy, and other ways we study thoughts, feelings and behaviour. Ex: political science looks at human behaviour with political situations. Social psyc looks at how people are influenced by other people. (this can be with real people, or even just imagining the situation. ) Imagining a situation can also influence how we act and think.
