Document Summary

Topic from this lecture and on are truly social topic because it requires people to interact with each other. A group exist when two or more people define themselves as members of it and when its existence is recognized by at least one other. Norms are ways of specifying what are acceptable (or unacceptable) attitudes and behaviours of group members. What is ok and not ok to do, what the group consider acceptable and reject. In some countries students are given specific guidelines on how to dress: central norms, the focus or the central aspect of what is right and what is wrong, e. g. Morality: people who violate central norms are punished by the group (have clear consequences) E. g. stealing: the level of tolerance is much smaller for central norms for the group vs general norms, general norms, tolerate deviences, there can be severe consequences for violating general norms.
