PSYC 2310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Physical Attractiveness, Tupperware, Social Comparison Theory
Document Summary
Method of investigation: controlled experiment, advantage: provides context for addressing whether or not an effect is real and which theoretical account explains it. We know what causes what: disadvantage: eliminate other sources of influence we eliminate factors that might be important, participant observation, researcher becomes an observer and participant of the situation and learn the dynamic of the setting. First principle: reciprocation, complying with a request of someone who has previously provided a favour, expecting things from other people after you"ve done something for them, ex. 66% didn"t complete when told cheque was coming: if you give people something in advance - they have to reciprocate. If i do you a favour, i expect you sometime to return the favour. Second principle: social validation, complying with a request if it is consistent with what similar others are thinking or doing, based on social comparison theory, we follow the lead of many others and similar others.
