November 21 -medial temporal lobe includes the hippocampus -if the lesion is selective, selective forms of memory impairment -anterograde amnesia: problems remembering things after the trauma (can remember things before the trauma) Edward C. Tolman - Cognitive Map -“response” or “place” strategies -have a t-maze and the sugar is in one arm • the animal must always go to this arm to receive the sugar • learn to turn right and go straight which will take you to the sugar • response strategy • do not even have to think about it • or, look for landmarks such as the sugar being under the clock • place strategy • use cues in the environment to navigate where the sugar is -Tolman said they use a cognitive map -to test: train the rat in one way, and then turn the maze around to see where they end up Striatum -regulation of voluntary movements; planning, initiation and learning motor behavior -structure that controls the cortex which controls the muscles -this region receives a lot of dopamine -affected in Parkinson’s disease begins with a lack of dopamine to the striatum • -also important for procedural learning Packard and McCaugh (1996) -discussing double dissociations • blue is normal • green is damage to hippocampus • red is damage to striatum subjects have to predict which pattern predicts which weather • • task based on gradual learning • lesion to hippocampus: you can procedural task but do not remember doing it • lesion to striatum: you cannot do procedural task but remember doing it -from place to habit response -injections of lidocaine (produces temporary brain lesion) into the: 1) hippocampus 2) striatum • most rats display a place strategy originally • white bars are control • lesion to hippocampus (bar 2) important for place strategies • • when they have a lesion here, display no place strategies • lesion to striatum (bar 3) has no effect • the striatum is not important for place strategies • keep training the animal, and then repeat experiment • after a couple weeks of training, animals display a response strategy • task becomes automatic to them • using hippocampus initially but are now using the striatum • bar 5: hippocampus lesion and behave normally • bar 6: striatum still using place strategies when they should be using response Amygdala -from the temporal lobe in front of the hippocampus -lesions alter a wide range of emotional behaviors and physiological responses -block emotional learning such as fear conditioning -if the amygdala is missing, everything is completely wrong -example: studies in primates • used for studies in emotionality • lose ability to respond with natural emotion • if a subcomponent of the amygdala is gone, you won’t
