PSYC 2390 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Cochlear Duct, Basilar Membrane, Tectorial Membrane
Document Summary
Theories of pitch perception will be a question on final. Overview: fluid filled chambers with hair cells, fluid moves around, hair cells move, ossicles push against cochlea to move the fluid, made up of many different chambers, stapes pushes against the chambers. Organ of corti: found in the cochlear duct, endolymph is full of k, stapes causes basilar membrane to move, reissner"s membrane gets pushed on by stapes, fluid moves, tectorial membrane. Help with pitch perception, but don"t do it themselves. They control the way the basilar membrane moves. Amplify sound cochlear amplifier (may have to google this) Hair cells have little cilia with cross links and tip links. When fluid moves, the cilia bend and tip links open up k ion channels. K floods in, increase membrane potential, create ap, release. Inner sends message to brain, where it"s sensed as pitch. Outer sends feedback loop to tectorial membrane: spiral ganglia synapse to hair cell.
