PSYC 2390 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Missing Fundamental, Musical Tone, Auditory Masking
Document Summary
Place theory (von bekesy: put probes in cochlea of cadavers and looked at how the luid moved in reaction to sounds, diferent waves depending on diferent type of sound. A high sound = a high wave, peak of the wave is close to the stapes. A low sound = a low wave, peak of the wave is farther down on the basilar membrane, far from the stapes, middle of the cochlea. The peak of the wave is where the basilar membrane has been displaced the most from where it originally was. Where the neuron is responding maximally = the peak of the wave: made an artiicial rubber luid-illed tube (like a cochlea) and strikes a tuning fork. High tone feel a buzzing in your wrist bc that"s where the waves are resonating. Low tone feel a buzzing farther up in your arm: doesn"t deal very well with low tones.
