At birth, these emotions include interest, disgust, distress and contentment. The positive emotions, interest and contentment are characterized by raised brows and pursed lips, and grinning lips, respectively. In contrast, negative emotions consist of disgust, illustrated with a wrinkled nose and protruding tongue, and distress, modelled by big pupils and raised eyebrows. Between 2 and 7 months of age, anger, sadness, joy, surprise and fear emerge. Anger is associated with a squared mouth and drawn brows, fear corresponds with a retracted mouth and lifted eyelids, surprise is illustrated by a dropped jaw and raised eyebrows.
