Document Summary

Introspection: examination of one"s own conscious thoughts and feelings. Science of psychology cant directly study the mental world. But must study mental world in order to understand behaviour. Wundt and titchener- view that psychology needed to focus on study of conscious mental events (feeling, thought, perception, etc. ) Only way to do so was through introspection. Scientific means to studying psychology- organism"s behaviours are observable. Behaviourist theory: studied how behaviour was influenced by various stimuli. Limit- didn"t believe in introspect, but beliefs, etc. play a key role in behaviour analysis. To properly study behaviour, we must consider both stimulus and persons understanding of that stimulus. Stimulus may physically differ but have the same effect/meaning. Ex. different ways of expressing a sentence with the same meaning. Behaviour is shaped by how a person perceives a situation and understands the stimuli. Method of beginning with observable facts and working backwards.
