Document Summary
Cognitive approaches to personality focus on differences in how people think: ex: participants shown a picture of a bloody head wound. One person may respond with personalizing cognition, and recall a similar even from their own life ( my brother once had a gash like that ) Another may respond with objectifying cognition, and recall objective facts ( head wounds bleed a lot because of the high concentration of major artery groups ) Ex: police officers who are high in field independence tend to do better in shooting tasks and in chases. Ex: field independent students learn more effectively in hypermedia-based instructional environments: skilled at analyzing complex situations and extracting information from the clutter of background distractions. One commonly noticed difference between people is pain tolerance, in which people undergo the same physical stimulus but react quite differently in terms of the pain they report experiencing.
