Crimes are often not reported (in 2009, 88% of adult sexual assault victims did not report the assault to police) Did not feel that the matter is important enough. The believe the matter has already been dealt with. They are fearful about what will happen to them or to their parents. They believe they are in some way to blame for the abuse. They were not aware that what was happening was unacceptable. True incidence of these is higher then presented because many go unreported. Sexual assault is a crime of violence not sexual desire. Sexual assault is any non-consensual sexual act either by male or female person to either female or male persons, regardless of the relationship between the people involved. Simple sexual assault (maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment) Sexual assault with a weapon or causing bodily harm (maximum of 14yrs) Prior to 1983 the law referred to these crimes simply as rape
