Lecture 2: introduing health psychology: on the highest level, there is a health care system which is embedded in the political system with different values. In the health care system, there is medical training of doctors, etc. However, there are many aspects of health that are out of your control. If you were born in syria, you have had your life turned upside down by the war. Going to the gym is not an option for you. Kinds of things people choose to do with their lives. There are two dominant models in health psychology: biomedical model, biopsychosocial model. "rebirth" of inquiry in europe & scientific revolution: rene descartes (1596-1650): new model of mind/body relationship, the mind and the body are separate substances, and they both interact with one part of the body (pineal gland) Idealism: there is only one substance, which is the mind. ) all disease is explained by looking at the body.
