and have an informed opinion based on what you read in the literature. Do not have an

Immunization
• Generally recognized as most successful example of primary prevention of disease
• Vaccination of susceptible individuals
- If you are not immune you are of vulnerable
• Immediate protection of individual
- When you are vaccinated you generally have immunity on an individual level
• Protection of community as a whole (high uptake)
- When you have high uptake in a population the disease can’t get a foothold and thus
the community is protected
• Herd immunity (community immunity)
- When a large number 90% immunity you have herd immunity
- When it comes to public health measures, immunization is one of the top strategies
- Most agree that vaccines are one the most successful preventions
- There’s controversy over vaccines
Why if there is scientific support?
- There are many people that cannot get vaccinated
Who depends on herd Immunity?
These people rely on herd immunity:
• People without a fully-working immune system, including those without a working
spleen
• People on chemotherapy treatment whose immune system is weakened
• People with HIV
• Newborn babies who are too young to be vaccinated
• Elderly people
• Many of those who are very ill in hospital
- There are all individuals and groups if there is an outbreak of the disease are at high
risk
- If the population does not have herd immunity this is a big problem
Does vaccination work?
- There is controversy around this
- However, scientifically there isn’t controversy
- Table in notes shows reduction of disease after immunizations
- evidence is extremely compelling that vaccines work
