In today"s western society, many men and women struggle with an eating disorder often promoted by impossibly high standards set by media and a combination of social, psychological, and biological factors (barlow et al. , 2015). There are currently two major types defined by the. Dsm-v and referred to as bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa. This paper however will only focus on bulimia however both can extremely dangerous and life threatening to the suffering individual. Diagnostic criteria for bulimia require five different behaviours to be present but is simply characterized my out-of-control eating episodes or binges. Self-induced vomiting, excessive use of laxatives, or other attempts to expel the consumed food typically follow this, brought on by feelings of guilt and anxiety of gaining weight (barlow et al. , 2015). Not surprisingly, bulimia is statistically found to begin in mid-late adolescent years of girls and boys with a ratio of 10:1 respectively (barlow et al. , 2015).
