Schizophrenia is a complex mental syndrome that can permanently alter the life of the individual that is suffering from it. It is probably most difficult for individuals experiencing one of these disorders to come to accept that they are unable to trust their own senses. As sentient, conscious beings, we have evolved to trust our five senses and rely on them to interpret our world in a consistent and accurate manner. When we hear something, we automatically assume that something, real and physical, is making the noise. When we see something, we naturally think we can trust our eyes and that the image we are experiencing is, in fact, real.
