Document Summary

The information people get from court and trials comes from the media. Unlike how they are seen in shows and movies: no last minute evidence/confessions, excitement on television but they are not as exciting in real life. Only 10% of cases go to trial. Other 90% get pleaded out or charges are dropped before trial takes place. A lot of screening takes place on each case to determine whether or not it should go to trial. Caseloads are diminished by using pleas i. e. in negotiation for a lesser sentence or dropping a charge. In criminal court it is based on what a possible punishment could be for a particular crime. The most cases come into their position. U(cid:373)(cid:373)ary offe(cid:374)(cid:272)es that do(cid:374)(cid:859)t (cid:373)o(cid:448)e i(cid:374)to the higher (cid:272)ourt u(cid:374)less appealed. Municipal and provincial by-laws: higher courts. Fewer cases but they deal with much more complex cases or peals form the lower courts.
