SOC 1500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Canadian Studies, Racialization
Document Summary
Canada is one of the world"s most active immigrant-receiving nations and has received international praise for its official policies of multiculturalism and inclusion. Racial discrimination has long been an issue within canadian society: with respect to the operation of the criminal justice system. Canada"s growing black community has been especially vocal in their complaints about racial profiling. Allegations of racial bias (in most cases) have been intensely denied by canada"s major police services. Racial bias within the canadian criminal justice system is difficult because there is a complete ban on the collection and release of all race-crime data. Ban includes: crime statics, all data related to the processing of racial minorities through the criminal justice system. Canadian researches do not have regular access to official data on the race of people stopped and searched by the police. Most research on this issue has been qualitative in nature.
