SOC 2070 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Informal Social Control, Mothers Against Drunk Driving
Document Summary
Wasn"t really deviant in the 50"s, but over time was constructed as such. Act was the same, our perception has changed tattoos. Signified poor character, affiliated with criminals and other deviants. Act is the same, our perception has changed (middle class interest, celebrity interest) Not an objective quality of the act/person. Deviance is any phenomena that violates social norms (ex objectivist assertion) But, those norms are a product of social relations (they are socially constructed ) Norms reflect subjective perspective of dominant group, those norms can change over time. Series of ideas regarding how and/or why social deviance exists. We theorize beyond the individual, trying to identify sociological forces at play that can account for behaviour in question, go beyond simplistic explanations, we account for broader social processes. Heretics were tortured (heretics has succumbed to forces of evil) Women who violated norms (femininity, domesticity, appearance, etc) tortured and killed to rid them of devil"s influence.
