Over time, it was constructed as such. The act was the same; our perception changed. Why? the act is still the same; our perceptions have changed. Middle class interest considered (cid:498)deviant(cid:499) until the (cid:883)99(cid:882)s signified poor character criminal etc. Celebrity interest maybe that created it as an art form. Not an objective quality of the act/person etc. How do certain phenomena come to be seen as deviant and others not? influencing perception. Deviance is any phenomena that violates social norms (ex. objectivist assertion) But, those norms are a product of social relations (cid:523)they are socially (cid:498)constructed(cid:499)(cid:524) Series of ideas regarding how and/or why social deviance exists. Go beyond the simplicity o (cid:498)choice(cid:499) or (cid:498)pathology(cid:499) Ex. efforts to prevent and/or sanction that which is (cid:498)deviant(cid:499) Formal social control: efforts made to an institutional level (cid:523)ex. (cid:498)rules and regulations(cid:499)(cid:524) Informal social control: informal efforts by family, friends, acquaintances etc.
