1: conflict theories: are predicated on one fundamental assumption society is predominantly conflict-oriented, rather than consensus-oriented , conflict, not consensus, is natural. The powerful create and maintain an image of consensus to pacify the masses: these theories focus on the political and economic structures of society. Key issue is power: conflict arises between many groups over power and the ability to see their interests fulfilled. Struggle for resources such as money, land political power ect: power is generally wielded by those in the higher social strata ie the upper and middle class. The act criticizes the poor and the fact that they have nowhere to go and that businesses do not appreciate these individuals being around. Professor steph howells: society is comprised of two groups with competing interests who are constantly struggling for power and the possession of valuable resources.
