Rapid change in the structure of society leads to a change in culture. Social disorganization theory was one of the first schools of thought to begin studying gangs. Social disorganization theory states that the cause of crime is a culture that accepts or promotes crime aka a deviant subculture. This theory had an immense impact on criminology, it debunked the warped thinking of pseudo- scientific biological theories that led to immoral practices such as eugenics.
