(1) everyone who commits first degree murder or second degree murder is guilty of an indictable offence and should be sentenced to imprisonment for life. 1st degree murder carries a 25 year non parolable sentence. Everyone who commits manslaughter is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for life. Life is not an minimum sentence for manslaughter. Every female who commits infanticide is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years. Certain exemptions for those that cannot be hold accountable for their actions b/c of their age or mental state. The young offenders act provides that individuals who are at least 12 but under 18 cannot be sentenced to longer than three years in custody for first-degree murder.
