The meaning of childhood is vague in the past. New concepts of childhood ie. if you grew up on a farm there"s a more hands off approach to childhood, the idea that children and youth as rebellious is relatively new. *there was no intermediary stage between childhood and adulthood. *teenagers was not a stage until post ww2. Child labour used to be rampant before compulsory education was a thing. In medieval europe, 7 was considered appropriate to start working full time. Children were often treated like adults (i. e 13 year old being hanged) Upper class children were depicted as adults in art. In the late 1800"s children were sent to work in coal mines because they were small enough. Hooligans: young people in england who had attitude, wore belts, had a style of dress. Children were lying around on the streets, took up a lot of space during the day.
