Historical perspective on youth justice: approaches to the history of youth crime. The meaning of childhood was vague in the past. Had to deal with the idea that children were no longer able to work into factories. They tended to put children in factories because there were not enough adults to be. In the past we can see children dressed quite like adults doing the work. They were working 12-13 hours a day. They would do jobs in which adults could not fit (mining) There was concern that if they are unable to be in factories what are we going to be doing with them running unsupervised on the street. Children would pickpocket and steal from food carts. Issues of when i child is child and when are they not (changes over time) Industrialization the scarcity of jobs; more kids running around the neighbourhood now.
