ZOO 2700 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Long Branch Attraction, Peppered Moth, African Trypanosomiasis
Document Summary
The vast majority of animals that live, or have lived on earth are invertebrates, greater than 99% of all living animals! Evolution by natural selection dark satanic mills and peppered moths. Manchester grew 10 times between 1770 and 1850, all fueled by coal. The landscape was transformed due to human industries. Trees were transformed from a light white colour to a dark grey ( covered in soot), as well as the number of trees drastically dropped. Two types of these moths are seen, the typica (more typically seen) and the carbonaria (less common). Before the dark satanic mills the variety typical was much more common due to the light colour of the trees providing good camouflage for the moths where the variety carbonaria were preyed upon more easily. After the changed landscape the typica was less common due to being easily preyed upon and the carbonaria became the common variety.
