Document Summary

Materials that are external to the plasma membrane. Found in plants: prokaryotes, fungi, some protists have cell walls. Made of cellulose fibers embedded in other polysaccharides and protein. Secondary cell wall: between plasma membrane and primary cell wall. Middle lamella: thin layer between primary walls of adjacent cells. 3 types: collagen proteoglycan fibronectin bind to: receptor proteins (integrins) that are in the plasma membrane. 2 subunits transmit signals between extracellular matrix and the cytoplasm attached to microfilaments and fibronectin. Proteoglycans: composed of backbone with points branching off. Protein core with carbs as the branching points. Neighboring cells adhere, interact and communicate through direct physical contact. Cytoplasm of one cell is continuous with another through plasmodesmata. Water, small solutes, some proteins can go through -allows for interaction with the cytoplasm. Membranes of neighboring cells are pressed together preventing leakage of extracellular fluid. Anchoring junctions- join cells together into strong sheets. Ions, sugars and small molecules allowed through that provide cytoplasmic channels.
