Document Summary

Lecture 36: again, the two principle features to every ecosystem is energy flow and nutrient cycling. At every step in an ecosystem, there will be a loss of energy through heat: detritus is composed of non-living components from once-living organisms of all trophic levels. This is because they have favorable conditions for most of the year: a temperate forest (e. g. an eastern deciduous forest) 1200 g/m2/year. The feces may be broken down by decomposers and returned to the plants as nutrients: the other 100 joules is assimilated by the caterpillar. Only around 33 joules, however, is available for new biomass production (new caterpillar tissue secondary production). The rest (67 joules) is used during cellular respiration: birds and mammals have less conversion efficiency. 33% was lost as heat in cellular respiration and 50% was removed as feces: trophic efficiency is the percentage of production that is transferred from one trophic level to the next.
