Document Summary

Some freshwater protists use a di erent strategy. Eg. paramecium: heterotrophic, unicellular, motile, animal-like-no cell wall, hypertonic cell interior - water moves in. Eg. euglena: plant-like - has chloroplasts - can use photosynthesis, paramylum not starch - unique, unicellular, motile - agellum, also animal - like - no cell wall (has pellicle, hypertonic cell interior - water moves in. Reproduction: these prokaryotes are not closely related, but they have reproductive similarities, both use a special cell called a spore. A reproductive cell giving rise to a phase in the organism"s life cycle. Will do this w/o fusion w another cell. Di erent & distinct from a gamete: gametes must fuse w another stage in the life cycle, the zygote develops into another stage in the life cycle. Two types in algae & fungi: asexual spores, sexual spores. Genetically identical to the parent cell that produced it. Products of meiosis (may look the same as asexual spores)
