Document Summary

No cuticle waxy lipid layer which helps plants prevent water loss . Sporophyte is dependent on the female gametophyte for nutrition short lived . Starts off as a spore, and from a spore an algal like filament grows out from the spore. Then develops rhizoids to anchor the moss body into substrate so not washed away. Then a segment grows out from the filament at one year, then on top of this growth it will do this again and again per year, with a apical meristem on the top of the filament which grew out. The entire thallus can absorb water and minerals, can also gas exchange over the whole surface such as carbon dioxide and oxygen, and can go through photosynthesis as it is autotrophic. The rhizoids will die off after around 1 year of being alive, provide the basis for soil for new plants by degrading into the ground. Seta: elongated stalk, raises up spore bearing capsule dispersal.
