Document Summary

Lecture 28 form and function: seed root & growth. Allow embryo to survive adverse environmental conditions: germination only when conditions for good seedling survival are met. Seed produced in fall when weather is nice, but winter will kill seedlings. Seed require an extended cold period to break enforced dormancy. Seeds germinating when only a small amount of moisture is present will soon die in the drying soil. Larger amounts of water leach a chemical inhibitor from the seeds, permitting germination. Resumption of sam and ram activity: water. Need water for cell enlargements: oxygen. Balance between o2 and h2o required or seeds will drown. Enough air around the seeds and enough moisture around seeds: optimum temperature for enzyme activity. Variable depending on the species and its evolutionary history. Ram and sam pick up a lot of the red dye because they are active in cellular respiration.
