TOPIC 16: URINARY SYSTEM
A) Urinary System: Overview
Structures:
o 2 kidneys
o 2 ureters big tube that runs out of the kidney
o 1 urinary bladder it's the the sa; oth ureters are attached to it
o 1 urethra little nub at the end of the urinary bladder (what you pee out of)
Functions:
o Regulates:
blood volume if you consume way too much
water, everything will be absorbed into the blood;
so you need the urinary system to regulate
blood pressure when you have a
pH
ion concentrations
o Eliminates wastes
e.g. urea, uric acid, hormones, drugs
B) Urinary System: Structures
1) Kidneys:
external anatomy:
o retroperitoneal - here its loated; the lie etee the dorsal all ad the peritoeu
o right kidney lower than left kidney (because the right kidney is crowded by the liver)
o supported & protected by 3 layers of CT:
a) fibrous capsule
b) perirenal fat capsule
c) renal fascia
o renal hilus (hilum): think hilum hill eause of the a that ures ito the kide
medial indentation so asiall here all the tues oes ito the kide
entry point of:
o renal artery (superior)
o renal vein (inferior)
o ureter renal pelvis is part of the
ureter; it's the thicker part on top,
just where it leaves the kidney
o nerves
internal anatomy:
o renal cortex (superficial) out area
o renal medulla middle area
contains:
i. renal pyramids
If you have a high blood volume
then you will have a high blood
pressure
Renal = kidney
The renal artery is above the renal
vein; think like in the heart, the
pulmonary artery is superior to the
pulmonary veins

apex(base) of pyramid = renal papilla
ii. renal columns (separate)
separate pyramids
contain blood vessels
2) Nephron:
functional unit of kidney (microscopic)
composed of:
a) renal corpuscle its like the head of the nephron
in cortex
site of blood filtration (first step in urine formation)
parts:
i. glomerulus iside the Boas apsule; its worm like
= capillary bed
ii. Boas apsule
surrounds glomerulus
collects filtrate from glomerulus
2 layers:
1) outer = simple squamous epithelium
2) inner = podocytes wrapped around glomerular
capillaries the are all like
iii. Filtration Membrane
consists of:
1. glomerular endothelium (capillaries)
simple squamous with pores (= fenestrations
windows; think in French fernetre)
2. basement membranes
3. Podocytes (of Boas apsule
simple epi. projetios lig to gloerulus
b) renal tubules
4 parts:
i. Proximal Convoluted Tubule (PCT)
in cortex
ii. Loop of Henle
descending + ascending limbs
in medulla
iii. Distal Convoluted Tubule (DCT)
in cortex
iv. Collecting Ducts
in cortex & medulla
connect nephron to ureter (via calyces/renal pelvis)
