Document Summary

The endocrine cell behaves as a sensor. Released from the parathyroid gland in response to decreased blood calcium levels. Calcium receptor embedded in the parathyroid gland monitor calcium levels. When calcium levels fall too low, the receptors are less saturated and pth is released into the blood. The half-life for a hormone will begin once the hormone precursor is cleaved and activated or when a hydrophobic hormone dissociates from the carrier molecule. Hormones can be inactivated via metabolism or taken up into the cell by endocytosis. Response is turned off as a result. Many hormones cal effect the same target. Often more than one hormone that has an effect on a given target is present at the same time. Combined effects can be totally different than what is expected of each hormone individually. Often combining two hormones together will show a greater effect than each hormone will produce on its own.
