Document Summary
There are key parameters tat we use to determine renal function. Urine flow rate - ufr is very straightforward and is based on volume per unit time: ml/kg. h. Glomerular filtration rate - gfr is not so straight forward and here we introduce the concept of renal clearance. Plasma renal clearance - volume of plasma per unit time from which all of a substance is. Whatever volume of plasma contains 0. 5mg of substance x must equal renal clearance removed . 0. 5mg/min of substance x is removed from plasma. Plasma concentration = 1mg/dl (1dl = 100ml) Substate is excreted into urine at a rate of 0. 5mg/min. Calculation of gfr required a substance that is neither secreted of reabsorbed - inulin. Inulin can only be ltered (not secreted or reabsorbed) because its a massive carbohydrate that humans cannot absorb. We are looking at clearance rate of inulin from the plasma. Where uin = urine[inulin] and pin = plasma[inulin]
