Segmentation - a chopping action that mixes ingested material in the lumen -> exposure to digestive enzymes. Migrating motor complexes (mmcs) - similar to peristalsis. Waves are stronger and may travel the entire gut length. A cleansing movement (e. x. pathogens, bacteria, rest of undigested material) Distal distension of the small intestine sends a signal to the proximal intestine. Afferent neurons send axons to pre vertebral ganglia. Postganglionic neurons bring the signal back to the gi tract. Increased strength and frequency of the migrating motor complexes. A protective mechanism of the host to ush out a lumina pathogen. Can be caused by the destruction of the ens that regulates motility. Distension of the distal ileum sends a signal to the stomach. Regulates the ow of material form the ileum to the caecum and colon. The ileocecal sphincter is usually partially open. Slow but constant ow of material into the caecum.
