Document Summary

Thomas hunt morgan won the nobel prize for work establishing the chromosome theory of inheritance and also for his role identifying and explaining genetic linkage and recombination. He applied linkage and recombination to genetic mapping also. Genes located on the same chromosome are called syntenic genes. Syntenig genes so close together that their alleles cannot assort independently are called linked genes. Genetic linkage cand be quanti ed to map the positions of genes on chromosomes. Alleles of syntenic genes can be reshuf ed when crossing over occurs between homologs to produce recombinant chromosomes. Homologs that do not reshuf e alleles under study are called parental chromosomes or non recombinant chromosomes. Genetic linkage mapping plots the positions of genes on chromosomes. Independent assortment of syntenic genes can occur if they are far apart on a chromosome so that recombination occurs very frequently. Syntenic genes that are closer together will tend to segregate together.
