GEOG 1280 Lecture Notes - Lecture 48: Pedogenesis, Parent Material, Soil Structure
Document Summary
Bedrock to regolith, (in place, glaciers etc. where does the parent come from) transported materials. Pedogenesis or soil evolution (formation) is the process by which soil is created. Factors controlling soil formation s= f (cl, o, r, p, t) , descriptive equation o s- soil properties: cl- regional climate, o- potential biota (organisms) o r- topography (relief, p- parent material o t-time. Soil are characterized by texture by the amount (%) of sand, silt and clay. You can"t sieve clay, so you take the finest materials and calculate the amount of clay through evaporation etc. You can also measure the ph of the soil, most soils are neutral (humid are slightly acidic (less than 7) and arid are more alkaline (greater than 7)). Soil colour : munsell colour system (value, hue and chroma), or book. A horizon (elluviated) b horizon (illuviated in fe and al) c horizon (may not be altered).
