Lecture 2 - air temperature and air temperature cycles. Temperature is a measure of the level of sensible heat of matter. Note: matter can be a gas, liquid or solid. If a surface gains energy through a flow of energy into it, its temperature increases and vice versa. Net radiation, conduction, latent heat transfer and convection. Latitude - also daily and seasonal variations larger range of insolation at higher latitudes. Surface type - albedo of surface as well as surface moisture. Coastal vs. interior location - temperature range is lower at coasts. Elevation - thinner atmosphere means less greenhouse effect. Standard measurement is at 1. 2 m above the ground surface. Note: air temperature can be different than surface temperature e. g. , a beach in the sun. Celsius temperature scale is the international standard based on properties of water. Thermometers liquid inside a glass tube expands and contracts with temperature. Thermometer shelter also referred to as solar shield.
