The federal government is responsible for issues that affect citizens across canada. Trade regulations, incorporation of federal companies, taxation (direct or indirect), the banking and monetary system, national defense, unemployment, immigration, criminal law, fisheries. Its primary responsibility is to ensure and support the country s economic performance. Overlap with federal, provincial, and territorial government responsibilities. Industry canada is the federal agency that administers a variety of laws affecting businesses and consumers. One of the most relevant pieces of legislation is the competition act, which aims to ensure that mergers of large corporations will not restrict competition and that fair competition exists among businesses. Competition has never been greater than it is today, both internationally and domestically. The competition bureau, as an independent law enforcement agency, ensures that canadian businesses and consumers prosper in a competitive and innovative marketplace. When there are substantiated allegations of wrongdoing in the marketplace, the competition bureau will investigate.
