Because, even if i do not know the beliefs and desires of others, i know mine and i can (to some extent safely) assume that those of the other are not that different. For example: i want to be happy, and i think everyone else does as well. In concluding, velleman examines the value that the things we care for have for us. We clearly desire many things (health, success, the company of others, etc. ) and value them accordingly. Velleman, following kant, believes that the value of everything we may desire provides reasons for pursuing it. But, if this is the case, then acting for reasons (which sets us apart and defines us as human beings) is primary, the thing for the sake of which everything else has value.
