Identify some evolutionary advantages to having certain traits. Personality: consistency in a person"s emotions, thoughts, and behaviours across time and situations. Humourism: personality fell into 4 categories based on mix of fluids. Phrenology (franz gall): shape of skull can tell you about personality characteristics. Personality traits: an enduring personal characteristic which varies along a continuum. Searched for all words in the dictionary that described personality. Measured people"s answers to questionnaires, observations of people"s behaviour, and personal descriptions of their past behaviour. Used factor analysis to group certain types of behaviours that tend to co-occur in people. Came up with 16 sources traits he thought determined personality. The five-factor model (mccrae and costa, 1987: extroversion vs. introversion. Are you outgoing or shy: neuroticism vs. emotional stability. Are you anxious, or calm; moody or emotionally stable: agreeableness vs. antagonism. Are you good-natured or irritable; cooperative or hostile: conscientious vs. impulsiveness.
