Those who answer the quesions will imagine the quesion happening to them and write down what they think would be one major cause of that situaion. Then, each answer is rated from a scale of 1 7. Internal-external, stable vs unstable and global vs speciic are rated. Higher numbers indicate pessimisic explanatory style and lower numbers indicate opimisic explanatory style. First, one must ind a direct quote of a person explaining why a good or a bad event happened to them. The researcher then quotes both the event and the explanaion and presents both to trained judges who rate the explanaions of the 3 dimensions menioned above. People with opimisic explanatory style out perform in both school and athleics: they achieve more and bound back faster from negaive events. Opimisic students do beter in classes than those who are pessimisic: get beter grades.
