PSYC 2660 Lecture 17: Lecture 17
Document Summary
The idea is to teach clients to pracice relaxaion strategies that involve speciic words. Someimes the iniial thought is irraional, so teaching an athlete to think raionally can be calming and avoid negaive thinking/nervousness. Step 3: pracice the subsitute behaviours using imagery, simulaions and/or role playing. In order for subsitute behaviours for angry responses to occur when they are needed in the presence of anger producing cues, the subsitute behaviours needed to be praciced. Can be done via imagery: imagining situaions that causes her anger and dealing with it properly. Simulaion are also an opion: presening situaions to the athlete during pracice that, in a real game, would cause her to lash out in anger. Step 4: use the coping skills in compeiive situaions with monitoring and/or supporive coningencies. Skipping steps is common and mostly, it ends badly, thus having to go back to step 2 or 3.
