Document Summary

Hemopoiesis = production of platelets and blood cells. Ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny: what occurs during embryonic development reflects evolution. In birds: b cells mature in bursa of fabricius (unique organ) In mammals (not humans): b cells made in lymphoid tissue gland in cloaca (openings of reproductive, urinary, and digestive tract: fish, reptiles, ad amphibians have most of the final development of blood cells in the circulation. Megakaryocytes = large cells that give rise to platelets. Reticulocytes = developing rbcs that have not fully matured; has no nucleus. Granulocytes = developing and have red-stain granules in cytoplasm. Premature rbc eject nucleus reticulocyte mature rbc. Platelets: cell fragments derived from megakaryocyte in the bone marrow: no nucleus. Thrombocytes: have a nucleus because they differentiate in the blood. Megakaryocytes = large cells within the bone marrow. Fragments break off to form platelets that enter nearby sinusoid to join circulation.
