Document Summary

Bmsc 220. 3 cell biology. Topic 2: structure and diversity of cells. Specialized cell types, such as neurons and muscle cells, provide useful models for investigating particular aspects of cell biology. The cell theory (3 major points) Rudolph virchow: cells can arise only by division from a pre- existing cell. In present- day cells, dna is the genetic material, rna is a carrier of information, and proteins carry out most functions. Structure of a typical animal cell. Structure of a typical plant cell. Provides the structural framework of the cell. Responsible for the movements of entire cells, and intracellular transport/positioning of organelles and other structures. Composed of actin filaments, intermediate filaments, and microtubules. Fibroblasts are: 3) blood: contains red blood cells (erythrocytes) and white blood cells. Useful in elucidating biochemical/genetic pathways: useful for dna/gene cloning and manipulation. Yeasts: yeast genome consists of only 12 million base pairs. (for reference, humans have 3 billion base pairs).
