EVSC 220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Clay Minerals, Solids Control, Vermiculite
Document Summary
De ne soil as three phase system describe soil separates texture di erentiate 1:1 and 2:1 clay minerals de ne isomorphic substitutes. Liquid: will always be some liquid, referred to as soil solution. This is where plants get the nutrients, water and where microbes live. Air: not always present, when soil is saturated there is no air. Silt (smaller than soil but chemically the same) Clay (smaller then silt or speci c clay minerals) As the minerals weather and give o nutrients clays are good at holding onto the nutrients and as water moves in it will retain the soil nutrients in the soil solids. When there is uptake of nutrients from the soil solution the clays will release the nutrients so there is a constant supply of nutrients. Depends on the di erent number of tetrahedron and octahedral layers bound together. Has basic crystal unit , one tetrahedral later and one octahedral layer.
